  • have completed one year of full-time study (or 24 credits) at the time of participation
  • are in good academic standing

are eligible to study as an exchange student for one or two semesters at a Hessen state university, university of applied sciences or art academy within the Hessen-Wisconsin Exchange Program. They can also apply for one of the Hessen International Summer Universities (ISU), the International Winter University (IWU) Kassel or the International Undergraduate Study Program (IUSP) Marburg.

For the various International Summer Universities (ISUs), the International Winter University (IWU) and the International Undergraduate Study Program (IUSP) no German skills are required. There are German language courses on all levels and the academic course work is taught in English.

For a semester or academic year at one of the Hessen Universites, students need a higher level of German language skills. All Hessen universities offer pre-semester German language courses free of charge for exchange students. In addition, there is a language training program along with course work especially designed for visiting students. For those who do not have sufficient German language skills: You will also find courses in the regular curriculum of various departments, which are taught partly or entirely in English.

Each UW System university will screen and select their students before sending applications to the administrative office in Oshkosh. In addition, students will take a German language placement test upon arrival in Hessen. Here is a general guideline of  the German proficiency level students should be at in order to succeed in their program of choice:

Total Immersion (taking all courses in German): sufficient knowledge of German to be able to actively take part in German-taught classes, good academic standing. Please note that additional documents will be needed to demonstrate your German proficiency such as a statement of purpose written in German and copies of official transcripts.

Semester/Academic Year with English-taught classes: sufficient knowledge of German to feel comfortable in a German-speaking environment, good academic standing. Additional documents may be needed to demonstrate your German proficiency such as a statement of purpose written in German or English and copies of official transcripts.

International Summer/Winter Universities (ISU or IWU) and IUSP: no German language experience required, but students should have completed their freshman year and be in good academic standing. A statement of purpose and copies of official transcripts need to be included in the application.
