The academic year in Hessen starts with the winter term in October and ends with the summer term in July the following year.


As an international exchange student you are either required to or we highly recommend (depending on campus) that you take part in a pre-semester German Language Course. These courses offer instruction in German grammar, reading, writing and conversation, and are designed to provide rapid acquisition of language skills. Cultural excursions may be included.


Semester dates of universities (Universitäten):
Winter semester (WS): Mid October until end of February
Summer semester (SS): Mid April until end of July


Semester dates at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen):
Winter semester (WS): Beginning of October until mid February
Summer semester (SS): End of March until mid July


The » Hessen International Summer Universities (ISU) take place between June and August.


The International Winter Universities (IWU) takes place in December and/or January.


Semester dates of the International Undergraduate Study Program (IUSP) Marburg:

Fall term: August - December

Spring Term: February - June
